Leadership and Service Awards

Join us for the 20th annual Leadership and Service awards! This UT Tyler tradition recognizes students, staff, faculty and organizations for their leadership and commitment to UT Tyler. 
Nominations open: March 1, 2026
Nominations close: March 20, 2026
All nominees and their guests will be invited to the Leadership and Service Awards Banquet. Winners will be announced at the banquet. 
20th Annual Leadership and Service Banquet:
Thursday, April 23, 2026 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
(By invitation only - RSVP required for nominees and guests)
 

Nominees must abide by the university’s policies and procedures as found in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) and Manual of Policies and Procedures for Student Affairs (MOP). Nominees must strive to maintain a professional and respectful relationship with UT Tyler faculty, staff, and peers. This includes ensuring compliance with student organization policies, timely communication and event planning, and fostering respectful collaboration between university employees and student organizations. Nominees must be in good academic and conduct standing with the university.

Self-nominations are accepted. Persons may receive and be nominated for more than one award. 

The Division of Student Success Awards: University partners who have gone above and beyond to support students and ensure student success:

  • Student Success Staff Partner of the year 
  • Student Success Faculty Partner of the year 
  • Student Success Department Partner of the year 

Dr. Robert Jones Leadership Award: The Dr. Robert Jones Leadership Award will be given to a student who demonstrates leadership, academic excellence, and meets the criteria listed below:

Nominee must:

  • have completed at least 24 undergraduate or 18 graduate hours at UT Tyler
  • demonstrate leadership at UT Tyler through student organization leadership, community service, and program or committee involvement
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00
Dr. Jones served at The University of Texas at Tyler as vice president for administration and as chief student affairs officer from 1984 - 1994, Jones resumed full-time graduate teaching in 1994, as professor in higher education leadership at UT-Tyler. He retired in 2000 as professor emeritus. He has been honored by UT Tyler as the namesake of the Robert L. Jones Student Leadership Award, an annual honor bestowed on an outstanding, peer-selected student leader.

 

Emerging Leader Award: This award recognizes a student-leader who has recently joined a student organization but quickly shown initiative and passion for the mission of the student organization and university. This nominee is working hard to develop their leadership skills and demonstrates potential to impact the student organization and university. 

Nominee must:

  • demonstrate the potential to be a continued leader on the UT Tyler campus
  • be involved in at least one campus organization recognized by the Department of Student Engagement
  • must be a new member in a student organization for less than one (1) year
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Legacy Award: This award is given to a graduating student-leader who has left a true legacy on campus with their leadership and involvement.

Nominee must:

  • be completing their undergraduate or graduate degree in May or End of Summer.
  • have been involved in at least two campus organizations recognized by the Department of Student Engagement
  • have held an elected officer position in at least one campus organization for at least three months
  • have experience serving as a mentor to other students either formally or informally
  • demonstrate the potential to be a continued leader after graduation in their field of study
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Outstanding Student Organization Advisor

Nominee must:

  • serve as an advisor of a student organization recognized by the Department of Student Engagement for at least one semester
  • be effective at motivating and encouraging the students of the organization
  • demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to supporting the students of the organization
  • serve as a mentor and encourage achievement of organizational goals.
  • strive to lead the student organization in accordance with the University’s strategic plan

Outstanding Student Organization Member

Nominee must:

  • have been an active member (not officer) of a student organization recognized by the Department of Student Engagement for more than one semester
  • help the organization achieve its mission through participation in most, if not all, of the organization's events
  • demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment to improving the organization and university; and
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Outstanding Student Organization Officer

Nominees must:

  • hold a current officer position in a student organization recognized by the Department of Student Engagement for more than one semester
  • demonstrate positive leadership within their student organization
  • motivate individual members of the organization to impact campus in a positive manner
  • have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.75

Greek Member(s) of the Year 

Nominees must:

  • be an active member of a fraternity or sorority that is recognized by the Department of Student Engagement 
  • represent their organization’s founding principles and values and demonstrate them in daily life
  • positively contribute to the advancement of their chapter, the fraternity/sorority community, and the university
  • have a minimum GPA of 2.75

Student Organization of the Year

Nominated organization must:

  • be a recognized student organization with the Department of Student Engagement for the full academic year
  • not directly received Student Service Fee funding as a main source of their operating costs (funds awarded by SGAC for events do not count against organization)
  • show school spirit by attending programs sponsored by other organizations, university-wide events, and athletic events
  • have contributed significantly and positively to the University’s strategic plan through its programs, activities, and other organizational efforts
  • have achieved or shown progress towards the organization's mission 

Academic College Outstanding Students: 

Nominees will be selected from each of the following areas:

  • College of Arts and Sciences
  • College of Education and Psychology
  • College of Engineering
  • Soules College of Business
  • Ben and Maytee Fisch College of Pharmacy
  • School of Health Professions
  • School of Medicine
  • School of Nursing
  • Honors College 

Nominees must: 

  • Demonstrate leadership aligned with the mission, values, and vision of the academic college and university wide strategic plan 
  • Show innovation and creativity 
  • Be recognized as a leader within the college or school.  Measured by faculty or dean recommendation.  Actively engaged in 1 or more academic student organization related to college/school.  
  • Show mentorship either formally or informally within their academic college
  • Hold at least a 2.75 GPA 

Most Engaged Student

This will be awarded to the student with the most Patriots Engage check-ins. 

 

Community Engagement award – Individual 

This will be awarded to the individual student with the most service hours documented on Patriots Engage for the academic year.

 

Community Engagement award - Organization

This will be awarded to the student organization with the most service hours documented on Patriots Engage.
