Dr. Amy Hayes, assistant professor of psychology, received the 2019 Outstanding Teaching
Award from the University of Texas System Board of Regents. The award recognizes exceptional
educators who best exemplify excellence, innovation and commitment to student success.
“Dr. Hayes is an outstanding example of a highly engaged, student-centered faculty
member,’’ said Dr. Charles Barké, chair of the UT Tyler Department of Psychology and
Counseling.
“In her Developmental Psychology and Research Methods courses, she includes her own
research along with that of others in the field,’’ Barké said. “When students learn
directly from an active researcher, this is the most impactful source for engaging
students’ interest and curiosity, to the point that several undergraduate psychology
majors ask to work with her in her research lab.’’
In addition to teaching undergraduate courses, Hayes mentors undergraduates in research
through her Child and Adolescent Development I Lab and the Department of Psychology
Research Program.
Hayes is the proudest when she sees her students presenting their research at conferences
across the nation. “Teaching students how to think critically and to engage in science
is my passion,’’ she said.
