Department of Technology Robotics Team Earns Awards at National Conference

The Department of Technology’s robotics team received multiple awards at this year's annual Association of Technology, Management, and Applied Engineering (ATMAE) national conference in Charlotte, NC.



Out of the 14 teams competing, UT Tyler's team and robot, Theseus, was selected for the People's Choice Award. They also earned third place overall and second place in the electronics and controls award category.

"This is just the second time the University has had a team compete at this conference and I couldn't be more excited that their hard work was recognized,'' said Dr. Heshium Lawrence, associate professor and ATMAE student chapter advisor. "They put in long hours and I really appreciate how dedicated they were to this competition.''

The objective of this year's competition was to build a robot that could streamline deliveries and storage of shipments in a mock warehouse room at the conference. Each robot completed a total of a three-and-a-half-minute shift to support the objectives while avoiding obstacles, with the first 30 seconds of the shift beginning with each robot operating only on preprogrammed instructions.

The members of the robotics team are industrial technology majors Mitch Trocino, Steven Cook, Kyle Owens and Bryan Gault and computer science major Xavier Yohe. The students also were awarded a $500 cash award.

Dr. Lawrence was also recognized at the conference with the university faculty excellence award.
