Winona Elementary Improves Student Outcomes in Collaboration With UT Tyler
Publication Date: 01/30/2020
After two years on the state’s Improvement Required list, Winona Elementary School
administrators set out on a mission to improve the school’s performance and student
outcomes.
Winona Elementary has steadily improved over the past year and its state accountability
rating was raised to an F to a B in August. The school attributes the accomplishment
in part to its collaboration with The University of Texas at Tyler College of Education
and Psychology.
UT Tyler received a three-year grant from the UT System Turnaround Partnership Initiative
in 2018 to partner with the school and support systemic improvement in the areas of
campus organization, discipline, instruction, curriculum, remediation activities and
board training.
The collaboration includes a “trainer of trainer’s’’ model, in which UT Tyler faculty
train Winona administrators and teachers to implement school improvement strategies.
