Message from the Chair

Jasper Department of Chemical Engineering

Welcome to the new Jasper Department of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Tyler. We are excited about the new program, which was recently established in the Fall of 2019 with a gift from the Jasper family - the largest of the history of UT Tyler’s College of Engineering. This addition makes our College the only comprehensive school of Engineering in the region, also offering Mechanical, Civil, and Electrical Engineering.

Our relationship with Jasper Ventures highlights the strong connection of the East Texas region with the petroleum industry, and points to a promising future as the Chemical Engineering program develops with a practice-based, student-focused approach to education. Students will enjoy the small school feel and the approachability and individualized attention that comes with it.

As the first group of students work through their courses, we have several ongoing activities: faculty searches are on the way to assemble the team of professors that will shape this Department; two laboratory spaces (1,411 ft2 and 782 ft2) are undergoing renovation and will soon be fully furnished and equipped with world-class equipment for Teaching and Research in Chemical Engineering; and research activities are about to start, as I have been blessed to receive my first award as a UT Tyler faculty member from the Sea Grant Washington, to develop transportation biofuels from sea kelp.

I would like to take this opportunity to invite interested students and parents to visit our beautiful city and campus, and to stop by my office for a conversation. The future looks promising for Chemical Engineering at UT Tyler, and we would love for you to consider joining us and becoming part of it.
