Message from the Chair
Welcome to the Department of Neurology at UT Tyler School of Medicine. As interim chair, I am honored to introduce a department that is dedicated to serving the unique needs of East Texas through excellence in clinical care, education and faculty-driven innovation.
Our region faces a significant burden of neurological disease with stroke, dementia, Parkinson's disease and epilepsy affecting thousands of East Texans each year. Our mission at UT Tyler is to address these challenges head-on by providing comprehensive, compassionate care to our vast patient population.
Our faculty includes board-certified neurologists with expertise in 10 subspecialty areas of neurology, many of whom are actively involved in clinical and investigator-initiated research and community outreach.
We are proud to offer a robust neurology training program, designed to prepare the next generation of neurologists to meet the needs of rural and underserved communities. Our residency program emphasizes hands-on experience, mentorship and exposure to a wide spectrum of neurological conditions. Our trainees also benefit from state-of-the-art simulation labs, telemedicine initiatives that extend our reach across East Texas and close collaboration with the UT Health East Texas system.
Our clinical services are comprehensive and patient centered. Our multidisciplinary teams work closely with neurosurgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation and primary care to ensure seamless, holistic care for our patients. We are especially proud of our stroke/thrombectomy program, which serves as a regional referral center and has contributed to a measurable reduction in stroke-related morbidity in East Texas.
The Department of Neurology at UT Tyler is committed to advancing neurological health in our region through research, education and clinical excellence. We invite you to learn more about our faculty, training programs and clinical services as we work together to improve the lives of our patients and communities.
Sincerely,

Shilpa Chitnis, MD, PhD, FAAN
