Welcome to the Department of Pediatrics
Pediatrics is a crucial cornerstone to the overall health of a community. Teen birth rates in Northeast Texas are 20% higher than the state and 170% higher than national averages. Research has shown that the 450,000 children who live in East Texas have poorer health outcomes than state and national averages. These are just a couple of the many reasons the School of Medicine has identified pediatrics as a top priority.
The Department of Pediatrics vision is to improve the well-being of children in East
Texas through excellence and innovation in health care, education and advocacy. Our
mission includes:
Clinical Care: Expand comprehensive, top-quality, patient and family-centered pediatric services
to increase access to healthcare for children in East Texas.
Education: Support the UT Tyler School of Medicine mission and provide opportunities to educate the next generation of pediatric providers.
Research: Promote intellectual curiosity, innovative and transformative research and interprofessional collaboration to advance pediatric care for our region and the field of pediatrics at large.
Community Engagement: Advocate for all children to have access to high quality, safe, equitable care through collaboration with community programs and services.
We plan to target expansion of pediatric primary care services across East Texas and increase our capacity to care for acutely ill children who require hospitalization. Additionally, the department of pediatrics will recruit pediatric subspecialists to support the region. Our hope is to decrease the burden of families currently facing the hurdles to travel to Dallas or Houston to receive the necessary care their child requires.
