Prerequisites

UT Tyler requires the following for admissions:

• Biology: 11 semester hours are required, two of which must be labs.
• Physics: eight semester hours are required, two of which must be labs.
• Chemistry: 12 semester hours to include one of the following combinations:
  • Two semesters of organic chemistry and one semester of general inorganic chemistry (for a total of nine semester hours with three labs).
  • Two semesters of general inorganic chemistry and one semester of organic chemistry (for a total of nine semester hours with three labs).
• Biochemistry: three semester hours of biochemistry.
• English: three semester hours of composition-based English.
• Math: three semester hours of statistics.

Please keep in mind the following regarding prerequisites for admissions:

• Prerequisites must be completed with a grade of "C" or better.
• All prerequisites must be completed at an accredited U.S. or Canadian college or university.
• UT Tyler accepts AP and online credit and/or coursework for prerequisites. We encourage students to take traditional classes.
  • UT Tyler only accepts AP credit if the school granting the credit lists the specific subject(s) and number of credit hours granted per course on an official transcript.
  • Online classes must be from an accredited institution.
• Prerequisites must be completed prior to matriculation.
• UT Tyler accepts Pass/Fail grades for prerequisites taken during the Spring 2020 to Fall 2021 semesters.

Interviews

UT Tyler’s admissions process requires an interview. We choose candidates to interview after reviewing their application, supplemental application, letters of recommendation and satisfaction of prerequisites. If selected, you’ll receive an interview invitation to select a time from an available date. UT Tyler conducts interviews in person whenever possible. Interview day involves two distinct interview types: multiple mini-interviews and a group exercise.

The admissions process for the master’s degree in biotechnology consists of an online application, official transcripts and other supplemental materials. The Office of Graduate Admissions oversees the application process for the MS in biotechnology.

Requirements

• Students must complete the graduate program application.
• Applicants must submit official transcripts from all universities and colleges attended, including community colleges that led to their baccalaureate degree, to the program office.
• Applicants must have completed and passed a course in Biochemistry.
• While an overall grade point average of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale is the minimum requirement, it is recommended that applicants maintain a GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and a 3.0 in their field of study.
  • If an applicant does not meet the minimum GPA requirements, it is possible to be admitted on a probationary status. You should contact the program advisor to see if GRE scores and/or a combination of other factors might meet the requirements for admission.
• General revised GRE scores should be a minimum of 295 (combined verbal and quantitative), with no less than 150 on the verbal section and no less than 145 on the quantitative section. Sign up to take the GRE or request an official copy.

Complete and submit the graduate program application at least 30 days prior to entering the program. UT Tyler accepts credit or recognizes degrees from accredited institutions. The following documents should accompany your application:

• Statement of purpose.
• GRE test scores.
• Letters of recommendation (3).
• CV/résumé.
• Official transcript(s).

Transfer of Credit

Under certain circumstances, a graduate student may transfer between six to 12 semester hours of graduate work from accredited institutions.

A student pursuing a master’s degree with a thesis may transfer a maximum of six semester hours; a student pursuing a master’s degree without a thesis may transfer a maximum of 12 semester hours. To transfer credit from other institutions, however, the student must submit an official transcript to be considered and have the approval of the appropriate academic department and academic dean.

The work must have been taken not earlier than six years prior to the student’s first graduate enrollment at the UT Tyler School of Medicine. Moreover, if the student fails to complete work on the graduate degree at the UT Tyler School of Medicine before the expiration of the six years, UT Tyler does not apply the applicable transfer credits toward a degree here. Any course accepted by transfer carries credit but not grade-point value. To transfer credit, the student must have earned a grade of “B” or higher for the class.

Admission Policies

An applicant for admission to graduate study must either (1) be in the final year of undergraduate work or (2) hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution. An applicant admitted to a graduate program at the UT Tyler School of Medicine must enroll within three semesters of admission. Thereafter, the applicant must reapply.

UT Tyler conducts the admission process in accordance with the requirements of the Admission and Scholarship Policies for Graduate and Professional Programs, which was adopted by the 77th Session of the Texas Legislature and amends Chapter 51 of the Texas Education Code.

Our advanced certificate programs are designed for the individual looking to strengthen their academic preparation in scientific foundations. These programs are not part of a degree; however, coursework may be counted toward a degree with the approval of the college in which they are housed. Certificate programs are narrower in their focus than degrees and provide preparation in a specific field. The certificate is not the equivalent of a license or certification required for practice in the professions or to teach.

We currently offer a Certificate in Biomedical Sciences (Fall Semester) and a Certificate in Interdisciplinary Medical Sciences (Spring Semester).

Program benefits:

• Complete the program through in-person or online classes at UT Tyler.
• No GRE is required.
• A minimum of nine credit hours is required to earn a certificate.

SUPERNet Summer Medical Scholars Academy

The SUPERNet Summer Medical Scholars Academy offers high school students the opportunity to participate in a five-day summer camp devoted to educating participants about the various career opportunities in healthcare and public service. During campus visits, students are encouraged to consider the wide array of options that exist in medical and health-related careers while learning what they need to do to start preparing for a bright future.

You are eligible to apply if you are:

• A high school student (grades 9-11).
• 16 years old by the first day of camp.
• Able to attend all five days of camp and have a sincere desire to learn about health careers.

Summer Research and Clinical Externship

Entering college freshman (at least 18 years of age), sophomores and juniors are given the opportunity to spend two weeks during the summer at the UT Tyler School of Medicine learning about biomedical research, clinical and healthcare professions.

The primary goal of this program is to provide a stimulating firsthand experience in scientific research, as well as provide insights into the different specialties of medicine by shadowing doctors, nurses and medical professionals. In this program, participants can interact with top-notch scientists, meet with expert physicians, and work alongside other research, clinical and healthcare professionals. This comprehensive program gives students the opportunity to closely observe professionals involved in the bench-to-bedside aspects of medicine. The program integrates classroom knowledge in biology, chemistry and physics with their practical implications.

You are eligible to apply if you:

• Are a high school senior or college student (freshmen, sophomore or junior).
• Are in good academic standing.
• Have a sincere desire to learn about medical science careers.

Tuition charges at Texas state universities are established by state law. The Texas 78th Texas Legislature (2003) allowed the Board of Regents of The University of Texas System to set designated tuition rates. The Texas Legislature does not set the specific amount for any particular student fee. Student fees assessed are authorized by state statute; however, the specific fee amounts and the determination to increase fees are made by the university administration and The University of Texas System Board of Regents. Other expenses at The University of Texas at Tyler are fixed within statutory limitations by the Board of Regents. The cost to attend UT Tyler varies with the individual student. The university reserves the right to change tuition and fees in keeping with acts of the Texas Legislature and/or policies of the Board of Regents.

How to apply:

A FAFSA® must be on file for a student to become eligible for internal scholarships. Follow these instructions to submit your general scholarship application.
