Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Community Engagement
The Department shares its passion for Chemistry and Physics with the community by holding events at area schools and organizations to engage children and adults in the fun of science! We feel that spreading the love and excitement for chemistry is not only something that should be done, but something that we enjoy doing. Our department routinely reaches out to surrounding schools and home-school groups to demonstrate the versatility of chemistry by showing hands on demonstrations and various chemical concepts and experiments. We are very proud of our good reputation with teaching kids which prompts schools to seek us out for their family nights, summer programs, and science fairs.
The Department works in relationship with the Discovery Science Place, a local science museum for children, through participation in their Mini-Maker Faire and culinary chemistry events. The Discovery Science Place Mini-Maker Faire allows us a unique opportunity to actively engage kids with hands-on demonstrations which they can take home. We also have a relationship with the local Boy Scouts troops to have fun with science and earn badges!
The Department also participates in ACS Science Coaching. This is a great opportunity for local K-12 Teachers to be paired with department faculty to develop engaging science curriculum and demos for students. Applications are due September 1st of each year.
Department faculty along side our award - winning ACS Student Chapter designs and tailors each event to fit the curriculum of the students or organization. Contact us for information about any of the Department activities, please click below.
