Brent Yergensen (Ph.D., University of Nebraska–Lincoln) is Department Chair and Professor
of Communication at The University of Texas at Tyler. His research and teaching focus
primarily on media theory and history, rhetorical theory and criticism, and organizational
communication. As a teacher, he uses methods in gamification and simulation learning,
case study analysis, and applied project development. He is the author of over 40
scholarly articles and anthology chapters, and his work has appeared in Review of
Communication, Communication Quarterly, Journal of Communication and Religion, Film
& History, Journal of Poetry Therapy, Mortality, Atlantic Journal of Communication,
Journal of Religion, Film & Media, Northern Lights, Canadian Review of American Studies,
Journal of Visual Political Communication, Explorations in Media Ecology, and Journal
of Religion & Society, among other scholarly journals and book anthologies. Previous
to joining UT Tyler, he served in leadership roles at Utah Tech University, including
Associate Dean of Communication and Media, University Curriculum Chair in the provost’s
office, and Chair of the Department of Communication. He is a published poet, blogs
as a film critic, spends his evenings on campus supporting students’ sports and cultural
events, and loves to travel with family.
