Biography
Dr. Gibbs earned his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illionois in 1979 and 1983. His research used a 2 MW, low-VHF, monostatic radar; a 1-acre antenna with custom pre-amplification and blanking equipment; and sophisticated real-time and post-processing software to make the first nighttime observations of coherent scatter from the mesosphere. These measurements used nighttime intermittent ionization from meteors rather than daytime solar ionization, and verified the presence of acoustic-gravity waves at night.
He earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1976 from Washington University in St. Louis. He is a Senior Life Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of Tau Beta Pi, the Engineering Honor Society, and Eta Kappa Nu, the Electrical Engineering Honor Society.
Dr. Gibbs spent 30 years in the aerospace industry working primarily on classified denfense contracts. At what is now L3-Harris, his 8 years included software embedded in moving-map cockpit displays, and writing bit-level software simulations of hardware designs to check for display artifacts.
During his 22-years at Northrop-Grumman he developed a processing pipeline for rapid creation of mission-specific, large-scale databases needed for wide-area map displays. Later he helped introduce network connectivity into airborne and laboratory environments. He was a major design contributor to a nationwide overlay network that simulated large-scale, multi-platform military operations, and that demonstrated connectivity solutions.
During his career Dr. Gibbs also served as an Adjunct Faculty member at Florida Tech, in Melbourne, Florida. He intitally taught courses in microbedding, and then taught graduate classes in networking for a number of years. For the 2016 to 2020 undergraduate classes Dr. Gibbs was the instructor for Junior and Senior Design classes in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Dr. Gibbs began working with UT Tyler in 2023. He is an advisor and mentor to student project teams in the Electrical Engineering Senior Design classes.
