Applying as a Transfer Student

UT Tyler Honors College

Students transferring to UT Tyler have the opportunity to enter the Honors Program through a two or three year commitment that focuses on expanding major-specific course work and offers the opportunity to pursue individual research.

Transfer students who enter the program as sophomores will take at least one Honors Core course each semester of their sophomore year before moving into major-specific track work their junior year.

Transfer students who join the Honors College at the start of their junior year will begin their time in honors by choosing their Honors Track: Service, Leadership, or Research. Students who choose the Service or Leadership tracks will work with the Honors Coordinator to develop and implement projects within the Honors College. Students who choose the Research track will contract with faculty members in upper-division courses in their major to complete additional work. Contracts may include an additional project, additional readings, additional meetings with a faculty member, additional research time in the faculty member's lab, etc.

In the senior year, the students in the Service and Leadership tracks will work with the Honors Coordinator to develop a year-long project to implement in the Honors College, across the UT Tyler campus, or in the East Texas region. Students in the Research track will investigate a research question over the course of an academic year and compose either a paper for submission to an undergraduate research journal or a poster for presentation at an undergraduate research conference. Students in all three tracks will also present their Honors Senior Project at the Lyceum.

In order to apply to the Honors Program transfer applicants must:

  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher from their previous institution.
  • Have at least 2 full years of degree coursework remaining (excluding summer semesters)

We will be accepting Transfer Applications for Fall 2024 until July 26, 2024. Space is limited, and admissions will be made on a rolling basis.
