The University of Texas at Tyler recently announced the new Laura B. Jackson Endowed Nursing Scholarship, which will provide financial assistance to nursing students who are taking classes at the UT Tyler Longview University Center.

"This new scholarship will enhance our ability to train quality nurses at our Longview campus," said Dr. Michael Tidwell, UT Tyler President. "Like so many others who have contributed to help students in Longview and Gregg County, we appreciate the Jackson and Darby families for their generosity."

Laura Blanche Jackson died of cancer at age 29 in 1992. Prior to her death, she requested that some type of recognition be made to nurses. Laura's cousin, Leah Killingsworth Darby, fulfilled her wish, and in 1993 a charitable trust was created by the Darby Family with Leah, husband John, son Miles and daughter Beth as Trustees.

"On behalf of the Laura B. Jackson Trust we're delighted to be a part of the endowed scholarship program at the UT Tyler Longview University Center," said Miles Darby. "The Laura B. Jackson Trust has provided awards and scholarships to deserving nurses and nursing students for more than 24 years. The UT Tyler LUC nursing program is another wonderful outlet for the trust's purposes. On behalf of the Jackson and Darby families, we are grateful for the opportunity to help deserving nursing students. Laura would be especially proud!"

"We are grateful to Miles and Mary Darby and the Laura Blanche Jackson Charitable Trust for endowing this new scholarship," said Mr. Jay Garland, Chair of The University of Texas at Tyler Longview University Center Development Council. "The BSN program can be challenging and we are grateful there will be additional financial assistance to help our students achieve their academic goals."

A member of the prestigious UT System, The University of Texas at Tyler focuses on student success and innovative research in the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered. With more than 10,000 students, UT Tyler has facilities in Tyler, Longview, Palestine and Houston.
