The University of Texas at Tyler Texas Alpha Xi Chapter of Alpha Chi announces its successes at the national college honor society's 2018 convention.

"Alpha Chi promotes academic excellence and exemplary character among exceptional students across all disciplines, and we could not be more proud of our student members who were recognized this year," said Suzanne Pundt, UT Tyler Senior Lecturer in Biology and Chapter Sponsor. "They represented UT Tyler extremely well with outstanding academic presentations in business technology and health sciences."

Accounting major Kelsi Oldham of Flint received a $2,000 Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship – one of only 10 awarded – for her presentation, "Blockchains: How this Innovative Technology is Transforming the Ways of Business."

Graduate nursing education major Lori Acosta of El Paso received the Kathyrn Hoyle Bradley Prize in Health Sciences for her presentation, "Reductions in Surgical Site Infections (SSIs)."

In addition, psychology major Ashley Van Dusen of Flint presented "The Relationship Between Childhood Snacks and Eating Habits in Adulthood."

UT Tyler also earned one of only 12 Region II Star Chapter Awards, given to those chapters nationwide that display exemplary student member engagement throughout the academic year. Region II includes Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas.

The Alpha Chi Honor Society has about 300 chapters in 45 states and the District of Columbia. A member institution, which must be a regionally accredited, baccalaureate degree-granting college or university, may invite to membership no more than the top 10 percent of its junior, senior and graduate students. The UT Tyler Texas Alpha Xi Chapter invites only the top 5 percent.
