The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that it has enrolled a record number of freshmen to join its fall 2018 cohort. The 882 first-time, full-time college students represent a 24 percent increase over last year's enrollment of 711.

"The UT Tyler value proposition is bringing University of Texas excellence with a personal focus on individual student success. It's a combination students and parents are responding to," said Lucas Roebuck, UT Tyler vice president for marketing. "Our recruiting strategy this past year has been to focus on the brightest high school seniors, and we're excited about the caliber and size of this new group of high-achieving students, many of them from here in East Texas."

East Texas drove freshman growth with double-digit percentage increases.

Total fall 2018 enrollment for the university is 10,284 students. Overall, undergraduate enrollment saw an increase of 2 percent, while dual credit and graduate programs saw a modest decline.

"A tight labor market always makes graduate school a harder sell," said Dr. Amir Mirmiran, UT Tyler provost and chief academic officer. "Considering how hot the job market is right now, the fact that our graduate numbers have remained essentially flat is impressive."

Supplementing first-time in college freshman, graduate and returning students were 1,164 new transfer students. In total, the 10,000-plus students will be taking a record 106,505 credit hours this semester.

The university continues to innovate for traditional and non-traditional students.

"To accommodate working professionals, we are partnering with the Chamber of Commerce and major East Texas employers to offer some of our programs via online, hybrid and executive formats," Mirmiran said.

Total Enrollment, by student classification
Freshman (0 to 30 hours) 1088
Sophomore 1163
Junior 1870
Senior 2419
Graduate 2435
Non-degree, post grad, dual credit and other 1309

Enrollment numbers were released as part of UT Tyler's official 11th day census data.
