The University of Texas at Tyler announced that two Palestine nursing students, Rachel Barbey of Palestine and Allison Sheridan of Elkhart have been elected president and vice president, respectively, to the Texas Student Nursing Association.

"This is an important milestone for the UT Tyler School of Nursing. Not only are we well-represented in a state and national nursing organization, but we get to be in the conversation about standards for nursing education and student leadership," said Dr. Kara Jones, clinical assistant professor and coordinator of Palestine campus.

The Texas Nursing Students Association is an organization dedicated to promoting professionalism and leadership for today's nursing students. There are more than 3,000 members representing over 100 nursing schools in Texas. TNSA functions at the state level of the National Student Nurses' Association. TSNA fosters research at the student level, the development of health policy by researching and creating resolutions that impact the nursing profession and healthcare, and promotes strong use of the parliamentary procedure.

The two students, who hold the top positions of the board of directors, will serve for a one-year period and attend board meetings throughout the year.

A member of the prestigious UT System, The University of Texas at Tyler focuses on student success and innovative research in the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered. With more than 10,000 students, UT Tyler has facilities in Tyler, Longview, Palestine and Houston.
