The University of Texas at Tyler University Academy announced today that it has held the largest lottery and wait list in the history of the district.

As a state-funded charter school, there is no student tuition. When a charter school has more students who want to attend than they have seats available, a lottery system is used to determine their enrollment.

From the latest lottery hosted on April 5, an enrollment of about 855 students for 2019-2020 is projected, increasing University Academy enrollment by 117 students across its three campuses in Palestine, Longview and Tyler. Operated by the UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology, University Academy currently enrolls more than 750 students.

"We are excited to see the continued growth and interest in our University Academy campuses, which serve as a laboratory for innovative educational practices," said Dr. Ross Sherman, UT Tyler College of Education and Psychology dean.

"I am pleased in the response we have had in our school," said Dr. Jo Ann Simmons, University Academy superintendent. "In years past, we did not even host a lottery for many grades due to limited interest. These numbers represent the increased interest in the UA across each of the East Texas communities."

The STEM-focused University Academy, founded in 2012, offers grades K-12, and it will graduate its first class this spring semester.

New Palestine Campus Facility

Palestine University Academy students will return in the fall to the newly constructed 15,000 square-foot building. Located south of UT Tyler's Mathis Hall, the new facility will feature 12 classrooms enclosed in a modular structure with a brick façade and surrounding landscaping.

"We extend our deepest appreciation to the UT Tyler Palestine Development Board for their efforts in making this a reality," Simmons said. "We look forward to providing students in Palestine with a brand-new facility to support their academic success."
