The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that Dr. Luis Gautier, associate professor of economics, recently received the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award for research and teaching.

“The Fulbright Scholar Award is one of the most prestigious honors bestowed on an academic, and we are extremely proud of Dr. Gautier,” said Dr. Amir Mirmiran, UT Tyler provost. “As a Fulbright Scholar, he will share knowledge and foster meaningful academic relationships internationally.”

Awarded by the U.S. Department of State and the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, this award will take Gautier to the University of Málaga in Spain.

He will engage in cutting-edge research, expand professional networks and lay the groundwork for future collaborations between UT Tyler and the University of Málaga. His work there will be part of a study of environmental policy for the olive oil sector.

“It is indeed an honor to receive this award,” Gautier said. “This experience and the knowledge shared and gained will be beneficial to our students, my research as well as both institutions.”

Gautier will be examining market-based environmental policies of the olive oil sector. The University of Málaga is in southern Spain, which is known as a major producer of olive oil.

“Spain is one of the biggest olive oil producers in the world, so what happens there is likely to affect world markets, not to mention the regional implications,” he said. “The University of Málaga has access to data and hands-on experience on the subject, so it is important to conduct research there.”

The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government and is designed to forge lasting connections between the people of the United States and the people of other countries, counter misunderstandings and help people and nations work together toward common goals.

A member of the prestigious UT System, The University of Texas at Tyler focuses on student success and innovative research in the more than 80 undergraduate and graduate degree programs offered to nearly 10,000 students. Classified by Carnegie as a doctoral research institution and by U.S. News and World Report as a national university, UT Tyler has campuses in Tyler, Longview, Palestine and Houston.
