Making Education Count: Accounting Major Credits UT Tyler for Success

The University of Texas at Tyler announced that graduate accounting major David Kyle Shamburger was recently recognized by the Beta Alpha Psi national accounting honor society during their 2020 annual meeting.

Shamburger, of Tyler, is the first UT Tyler accounting student to participate on the winning team in the annual BAP consulting competition, Project Run With It, which teaches BAP student-members how to work and collaborate on virtual teams, apply data analytic skills and improve critical thinking skills in solving problems for other people and organizations. Shamburger and the team developed a strategic branding initiative to raise funds and a strategy for promoting a home-schooling program for Cultured Kids, Inc., competing with 13 other international collegiate teams from the US, Australia and New Zealand.

Beta Alpha Psi gives numerous awards to chapters and professionals, however, Project Run With It is one of only two events that awards student members and is the only one based on a competitive academic challenge, according to Dr. Roger Lirely, UT Tyler department chair.

“Hours of preparation and collaboration went into this effort, and we are very proud of David Kyle,” Lirely said. “He is an outstanding student – inquiring, conscientious and diligent – and representative of the kind of person every professional-preparation accounting program desires.”

Shamburger credits UT Tyler for his continued success both as a student and his future career success. He noted that his experiences at UT Tyler taught him to become more disciplined, increase his determination in life and carry an attitude to strive and achieve.

“UT Tyler provides the perfect environment for unlimited growth and learning,” said Shamburger, a graduate student in the University’s MAcc program. “I greatly appreciate the faculty and staff and their passion to teach. So many of the instructors have had careers in the subjects they teach, providing priceless insight and experience to students.”

He also appreciates the personal attention and mentorships he built with the Soules College of Business faculty, who also awarded him the prestigious Texas Society of CPAs Scholar Award for 2020, based on his academic achievements and his potential for success in the accounting profession.

“I enjoy not only learning about them, but also learning from them,” he said. “I’ve established wonderful, professional relationships that will last long after I graduate.”

After many personal struggles, he additionally is grateful for finding his career path at UT Tyler, and he looks forward to the future.

“Just 10 years ago, I never could have imagined where I am now – I thank God every day for everything He has blessed me with, and I am so excited to discover His plans for my life that are to come,” Shamburger said.

The reporting officer for UT Tyler’s Mu Kappa chapter of Beta Alpha Psi, Shamburger also is vice president of programming for Beta Gamma Sigma, a member of the UT Tyler Alpha Chi honor society and a founding member of the UNITE College Ministry student organization.

Shamburger will graduate in August 2021 with a Master of Accountancy. He will begin post-graduation work at the Dallas office of the London-based accounting firm, Ernst & Young.

In his spare time, Shamburger enjoys reading fiction and personal development books, water sports, outdoor adventures and spending times with friends.
