The University of Texas at Tyler announced today that The Patriot Talon student newspaper recently won five awards at the 2021 Texas Intercollegiate Press Association (TIPA) Convention. The annual TIPA convention was held virtually this year.

“Five awards at TIPA would be something to celebrate in any year,” said Dr. Terry Britt, PhD, assistant professor of mass communication and interim faculty adviser to the Patriot Talon. “With all the difficulties brought upon normal newsgathering methods and publishing in the midst of a global pandemic for most of 2020, this accomplishment shines even brighter for everyone involved.”

UT Tyler students earning TIPA awards for previously published material include:

  • Zoe McGhee of Brownsboro – first place in feature writing.
  • Chandler Gibson of Dallas – second place in audio newscast and honorable mention in podcast competition.
  • Karen Mendoza of Mount Pleasant – second place in feature photo.
  • Dove Lott of Houston – third place in illustration.
