Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board 2021 Star Award Dr. Snella at the THECB Star Awards

The University of Texas at Tyler was recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board with the 2021 Star Award. The award honored institutions for their health, safety, and initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. Andrew Pettee, Assistant Vice President & Dean of Students and Kathleen Snella, Interim Dean for the Fisch College of Pharmacy represented The University of Texas at Tyler at the Stars Award Recognition Ceremony.

When faced with the challenges presented by COVID-19 on experiential education, the Fisch College of Pharmacy worked to minimize the impact on student experiences. When some clinical sites no longer allowed students to come in person due to COVID-19 procedures, the Office of Experiential Education found replacement sites so that no students were delayed in graduation. Additionally, they worked with sites to develop alternative activities such as remote patient care to support hybrid rotation structures so that students could still achieve their required learning and clinical hours without having to be on site 100% of the time. For example, students attended medical rounds with the rest of the healthcare team virtually.

The Fisch College of Pharmacy immediately respond to the call to help support community pharmacies across the state. The college worked closely with the Texas Pharmacy Association to strategically pair over 100 pharmacy students with community pharmacists so their patients would receive the best possible care.

The University of Texas at Tyler was one of ten institutions recognized. Other award recipients included: Houston Community College, Lone Star College – North Harris, McLennan Community College, Odessa College, Sam Houston State University, Texas A&M University Commerce, Texas State Technical College, The University of Texas at Arlington, and The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio.

“This year’s award recipients illustrate the tenacity and determination of Texas institutions that was required for the swift response and ongoing recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Dr. Fred Farias, chairman of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board. “As we celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Star Awards, I applaud their extraordinary efforts and commend their innovative creative approaches to these unprecedented challenges.”
