Our History

The global electronic sport (eSports) market is predicted to reach 1.79 billion U.S. Dollars in 2022. Not only are there millions of viewers and eSports player globally, there are hundreds of colleges and universities who are members of the National Association of collegiate eSports (NACE) in the United States.

In response to this growing global trend, the University of Texas at Tyler has teamed together with the Departments of Education and Psychology, Human Resource Development, Computer Science and the University Center of Operations to collaboratively create an eSports initiative on campus specifically targeting our current and incoming Patriot students in order to better engage as well as ensure that all students have an impactful collegiate experience.

Four specific goals

  • Student Success
  • Inclusive and Diverse Student Engagement
  • Research, Scholarship and Cyber Security
  • Community Outreach and Collaboration

UT Tyler invested $14,000 (through a Presidential Scholarly Research Grant) as seed money in the Fall of 2020 to help launch this initiative and we are proud to now have a gaming lab with 5 gaming stations (each gaming station cost approximately $1,753.00) in the Soules College of Business, set up in collaboration with CDWG’s eSports manager. We currently have 12 students ready to participate in the first UT Tyler eSports Team for the 2021-2022 school year. The Soules College of Business in collaboration with the Computer Science Department is investing another $10,000 to add 5 more gaming stations for the 2021-2022 school year!

Short-Term Goals

  • Sponsor and/or pay for the cost of internet for Fall 2021 through Spring 2022 – $2,500/annually
  • Pay for 1 student worker/eSports manager – $2,000/annually
  • Become a part of a UT Tyler eSports advisory council
  • Explore on and off campus collaborative partner possibilities

Long-Term Goals

  • Add 20 more computers/gaming stations ($35,060)
  • Grow from 1 to 5 teams and compete with UT Dallas and UT Arlington as well as other larger schools
  • Fund 1 full-time eSports manager position
  • Develop gaming/game creation courses
  • Extend eSports to Elementary, Middle and High School students and grow eSports teams/mentoring
