VIDEO PRESENTATIONS

There are many presentations in the Other past winners link below. Watch a couple of them and find the ones that most relate to your idea or that you find interesting. Watch how they go from Idea to Validation using the Canvas. Here are two quick examples:

1. MED TECH
2017 BMC 1st Place - Instapath (Tulane University). https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F7AYHJAkK-A

We want to help you with your presentation...it's not a difficult as it might seem. However, we will not create your presentation or conduct your market validation. The validation process is what this competition is about.

If you competed in the Big Idea Pitch the questions from that competition are still relevant: current problem, current solution, your solution, Why is yours better? THEN the validation component part of the presentation begins using Business Model Canvas. Ultimately Investors or potential grant benefactors want to know, how have you have "de-risked" the idea?

For all ideas:

  • Who is your customer segment(s)?
  • How many people from each segment have you spoken with?
  • How do you know that they will want your product?
  • How much will they pay?
  • What pivots (if any) have you made to the product, customer segment, value proposition etc?
  • How much do you think it will cost to test the product and bring it to market?
  • How much do you think it will cost to produce in scaled quantities?
  • Do you have intellectual property and who owns it?
  • How do you plan on getting your product to market?
  • Who are your key partners?

For instance, some questions for a medical device are:

  • Do you know what FDA classification you are in?
  • Are there cycle tests involved?

How do I validate?

Examples:

  • Surveys online or in person
  • Kickstarter campaign (crowd funding)
  • Social media: Tik Tok, Instagram, etc.
  • Could be that you need to speak with industry professionals in medical or agricultural, or other sciences?

Go to where your likely customer is and share a bit about your idea and find out if they like your solution and how much will they pay? Track your results and use them in your presentation. Remember some of your results may be negative and cause you not to proceed with your idea. That's ok! Its better to find out now if you need to go in a different direction (pivot), especially if you are hoping to have investors.

If your idea is selling to wholesalers you still need to know if their customer will buy the product from them. Same principle applies if you hope to license your technology. Find out if there is a market for it.

Last item. If you want or need to have someone else present for you because of presentation fears, accent, or other, it's ok. Talk with us and we will offer some suggestions that may not require you giving up equity in your company should you form one. Or you may like the person and want to add them as a co-founder.
