Message from the Division Chief
Welcome to the Division of Infectious Diseases at The University of Texas at Tyler School of Medicine. It is a privilege to lead a division built upon decades of excellence in infectious diseases care, research and education—a legacy that continues to grow as we expand our academic and clinical footprint across East Texas and beyond.
While our division was formally established in 2024, our roots extend beyond half a century, to the era when UT Tyler began its work as a tuberculosis sanatorium following World War II. From those early days, our institution has evolved into a center of innovation and discovery in the fields of tuberculosis, non-tuberculous mycobacteria, nocardiosis and antimicrobial resistance, among many others.
Today, our faculty are nationally recognized leaders whose expertise span infectious diseases, antimicrobial resistance, pharmacologic modeling, clinical diagnostics, epidemiology and medical education. Our team is proud to help support and contribute to several ongoing clinical trials and lead multiple federal, state and industry-funded research programs that advance our understanding and treatment of challenging infections.
At the heart of our mission is a commitment to improving patient outcomes and ensuring access to high-quality infectious diseases care. We provide comprehensive consultation and management for complex bacterial, fungal and viral infections, serving as a regional and national resource for specialized expertise in infectious diseases.
As we look toward the future, we remain deeply dedicated to our tripartite mission of clinical excellence, research innovation and education. We are training the next generation of clinicians and scientists who will carry forward UT Tyler’s longstanding legacy of service, discovery and compassionate care.
Sincerely,
Monika Kumaraswamy, MD, D(ABMM)
