The Forefront of Health Professional Education in East Texas

The Health Science Center and UT Health East Texas have joined forces to meet the growing need for health professionals and expand healthcare services in our region.

All graduate programs require the following for admission:

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Recognized Comparable International Degree: Applicants must hold a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution in the U.S. or a foreign equivalent.
  • GRE or GMAT Scores: UT Tyler does not have a designated minimum GRE or GMAT score, but the desired minimum GRE score range for most programs is 290-300. You can find more information about the GRE exam on the Educational Testing Service website. The official GRE score transmission code for The University of Texas at Tyler is 6850. You can find out more about the GMAT exam on the Graduate Management Admission Council website.
    • Certain programs, like our non-degree seeking options, do not require an entrance exam, while others offer waivers. Please check the requirements for your chosen degree program on our Graduate Programs page.
  • Proof of English Proficiency: Applicants with an undergraduate degree from a foreign institution must submit the results of an English proficiency examination before UT Tyler grants admission. There are some exemptions to our language proficiency requirement. Review all English proficiency requirements.
  • Proof of Bacterial Meningitis Vaccination: Please see 's Meningitis Policy.
  • Additional Departmental Requirements: Some programs require additional materials for admission, such as letters of recommendation, a resume, a statement of purpose and/or portfolios. Refer to the admission requirements of the program to which you are applying to determine if and what additional requirements should be submitted.

    All submitted documents become the property of UT Tyler and cannot be returned to applicants.

Applicants should submit official transcripts demonstrating proof of degree directly to the Office of Graduate Admissions.

  • Official transcripts are typically mailed directly from the issuing institution in a sealed university envelope.
  • UT Tyler also accepts electronic transcripts sent via a secure delivery method (Parchment, E-Script Safe, Speed-E, etc.) directly from the issuing institution. Electronic transcripts forwarded by the applicant are not considered official.
  • Community or junior college transcripts are typically not required unless otherwise stated on your academic program’s page.
  • UT Tyler transcripts need not be forwarded by the applicant.
  • With the exception of the programs listed below, applicants with foreign transcripts must submit a detailed, course-by-course international transcript evaluation. The following programs do not require an evaluation unless specifically requested:
    • Computer Science
    • MSCE Civil Engineering
    • MSEE Electrical Engineering
    • MSEL Engineering Leadership
    • MSME Mechanical Engineering

The evaluation determines an applicant's degree comparability to a U.S. bachelor's degree and provides their GPA on the U.S. scale. accepts international transcript evaluations conducted by the current members of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services.

To complete your application, follow these steps:

  • Click Apply Now.
  • Click “Create Account.”
  • After filling out your profile and creating a username/password, log in.
  • Click “Start Application.”
  • Those seeking an F or J visa choose “International.” All others choose “U.S. Graduate.”
  • Answer all questions.
  • Submit the application fee to complete the application.

Once your application has been processed, Graduate Admissions sends an email explaining each document needed to complete the application.

You can check the status of submitted admission materials in your myUTTyler account. Expect to receive Login information for this account via email about two business days after the application is submitted. Once all items are received, files are forwarded to the academic department for review. Graduate admission decisions are made by the academic departments.

Most programs offer rolling admissions. Allow up to two weeks for the evaluation of an admission file. Official notification is emailed to applicants within 24 hours of admission decisions, and a hard copy is dropped in the mail shortly after. UT Tyler does not admit all qualified applicants.

If you previously applied to UT Tyler, your application may still be valid! Applications are good for up to three semesters (including summers). You may be able to email us or complete a Change of Program Form instead of reapplying.

You may transfer a maximum of nine credit hours of graduate coursework from an accredited institution or completed at before admission to a master's program. PhD applicants may transfer a maximum of 12 credit hours. The PhD-HRD program does not accept any transfer credit. Some programs accept fewer transfer hours. Please refer to the catalog for the requirements of the proposed degree. All transfer credit must have been completed with a grade of "B" or better and be approved by the degree-granting program.

The transfer application process consists of a Transfer Credit Form and an official transcript from your previously attended college or university. These must be submitted during your first semester at UT Tyler to receive transfer credit.

You should apply as a non-degree seeking student if you wish to take graduate-level academics without working toward a master's degree or graduate certificate, including for fulfilling prerequisites, personal development, licensure or professional development. We offer several tracks: graduate non-degree seeking, post-baccalaureate non-degree seeking, transient and NeXus.

All non-degree seeking students are ineligible for financial aid.

Graduate Non-Degree Seeking

Graduate non-degree seeking status is designed for students who need to take a few graduate courses but are not interested in earning the entire degree. You may only complete a maximum of nine hours of graduate-level work unless you have special permission from The Graduate School. No more than nine hours earned as a non-degree seeking student may transfer to a master's or graduate certificate program, at the discretion of the program adviser. Please note that some graduate programs are not open to non-degree seeking students.

To be admitted, submit official transcripts showing a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8. does not require entrance exams. Students with foreign transcripts may need an evaluation and language proficiency exam scores.

For the dean to approve any graduate hours over the nine allowable hours limit, you need to send an email stating that you do not intend to pursue a graduate degree here at and that you understand that no more than nine hours of graduate work may apply to any future degree, should you change your mind. This email is then forwarded to the dean for evaluation. The dean sends an email with their decision included.

Post-Baccalaureate Non-Degree Seeking

This admission type is for students who have earned a baccalaureate degree but wish to take additional undergraduate classes without earning a second baccalaureate degree. Students are not limited in the number of hours of undergraduate work they may complete and pay undergraduate tuition rates.

To be admitted, simply submit official transcripts — no minimum GPA and no entrance exams are required. Students with foreign transcripts may need an evaluation and language proficiency exam scores.

Transient Students

Students pursuing degrees at other colleges and universities who wish to take classes at UT Tyler may be admitted as a transient student. To be admitted, please submit an application, application fee and completed Transient Approval Form.

You must have approval from the Nursing program to participate in NEXus. Read more on the Nursing PhD page.

On the application:

  • Select "NEXus Program" under School of Nursing in the program dropdown menu.
  • Select “Pay by Check” when prompted for payment (waives the application fee).

The Graduate Restart program allows students who performed poorly in their initial attempt at graduate studies to have a fresh start toward meeting graduation requirements for a degree or credit-granting certificate.

To Apply for Graduate Restart

A graduate student who has not been enrolled at UT Tyler for at least 12 months prior to readmission may petition the Dean of The Graduate School to remove from their graduate cumulative GPA all grades earned during their prior enrollment at the university. Thus, the student who re-enrolls under Graduate Restart automatically forfeits the right to use any of their previous graduate credits, including previously accrued transfer work, toward the current degree requirements. applies only courses attempted following readmission to the university or another institution toward degree requirements.

A student may file a restart petition for readmission to a program in which they were not previously successful or to a different graduate program. The graduate program adviser/coordinator or chair of the program, the dean of the college and the dean of The Graduate School must approve all restart petitions.

To be considered for Graduate Restart, students must submit a Graduate Restart Request Petition to the adviser of the graduate program in which they seek their degree and provide a compelling justification for reinstatement. Students should explain how circumstances that previously impeded their success in graduate school have been addressed and how their likelihood for success has improved.

Students must submit all materials required for full admission to the program (GRE scores, recommendation letters, statement of purpose, etc.). To participate in Graduate Restart, a student must meet all the requirements for full graduate admission; does not allow provisional or conditional admission.

A student should carefully review this information to make sure they understand the terms of the program. If the student agrees to the provisions of Graduate Restart, they should meet with their graduate program adviser and be certain to submit all required documents to support the application. The graduate adviser then initiates the Restart form.

For the Graduate Restart applicant, the catalog in effect at the time of the Graduate Restart application is effective. The Graduate Restart option is tied to the admission process and may only be requested at the time of readmission.

Once Accepted

If UT Tyler grants readmission under Graduate Restart, the following apply:

  • Enroll within one year (12 months) of the granting of the petition.
  • Maintain good academic standing according to current Graduate School policies.
  • Policies on probation and suspension apply differently to Graduate Restart students only in that suspension results in dismissal from the university.

All hours attempted and all grades earned before and after Graduate Restart remain on the student's official, permanent academic record (transcript). Graduate Restart affects only the cumulative graduate grade point average for the restarted program of study. The Graduate Restart process does not remove evidence/documentation of the student's overall academic history at the university, such as grades previously received, even if a course is repeated in the process of Graduate Restart.

A student may exercise the Graduate Restart option only once in their graduate career at the university, regardless of the number of times they enter/attend a graduate degree program at UT Tyler.

International applicants may have to submit additional documents to complete the admissions process and secure a student visa. Please review all information about applying to one of our graduate programs as an international student.

The nonrefundable graduate application fee is $50 for domestic and $75 for international applications. We offer waivers for qualifying applicants.
