Biography:

Barbara J. Seaworth is the Co-Medical Director for the Heartland National Tuberculosis Center of Excellence in San Antonio, Texas. She has over 30 years’ experience with treatment of tuberculosis (TB) including complex and multi-drug resistant TB. She has served as an expert TB consultant for the States of Texas for over 25 years and as an expert TB consultant for the Texas Binational Projects along the Texas border with Mexico.

She is the Co-Chair of the Community Research and Advisory Committee for the CDC TB Trials Consortium and a Consultant with the Global TB Network TB Consilium. Dr. Seaworth is the first recipient of the TB Physician of the Year award (2010) from the National TB Physician’s Association and is the 2024 recipient of the International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease (IUATLD) North American Region Lifetime Achievement award.

Clinical/Research Interests

Interests include:
  • Treatments for TB which are targeted to the individual; that better address the site of disease, the amount of disease and the immune profile of the person
  • Diagnostic measures that identify subclinical disease, treatment response and risk for post tuberculous complications such as post tuberculous lung disease and other inflammatory related phenomenon..
  • TB attacks many vulnerable individuals
  • Diagnosis, care, and immunology of TB disease during pregnancy and the immediate post-partum period as well as the impact on the infant.
  • Drug resistant TB and new therapies and strategies to protect MTB isolates from developing resistance to them.
