Developmental English

Incoming freshmen who take the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) and are identified as TSI liable can register for ENGL 0300 or take a Summer Boot Camp to become TSI complete.  Integrated Reading and Writing (ENGL 0300) works as a co-requisite with the college-level course (ENGL 1301). The courses are taken in the same semester and provide both academic and non-academic development for students who would like to optimize their opportunities for success in their first year of college. To find more information about TSI: https://www.uttyler.edu/admissions-aid/tsi/

The Department of Literature and Languages offers two options for students who have been identified as needing additional support in college-level English.

Integrated Reading and Writing (IRW) Summer Boot Camp:

This option is a non-course based option (NCBO) that allows students to become TSI complete before starting their first college-level English courses in their fall semester. The Summer Boot Camp is free to students. Applications for the 2025 summer program will be accepted until June 9th. * This program is supported by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board’s College Readiness and Success Model grant.

ENGL 0300: Integrated Reading and Writing (3 hrs):

This course must be taken as a corequisite with ENGL 1301, in 7-week and 15-week options.
ENGL 0300 is most effective for those students who are TSI liable in all three content areas (reading, writing, and math) and/or score lower than a level 4 on reading and writing. The additional course time serves these students most effectively by offering more opportunities for skill development and integration into college-level work. This course enables the students who are TSI liable to carry a full course load and receive financial aid.
