Welcome to the Department of Internal Medicine
At the heart of East Texas, a new chapter in healthcare is unfolding. For the first time, our region is home to its own medical school, creating new opportunities to train physicians, advance research, and improve the health of the communities we serve.
The need for this work is clear. According to the 2021 Health Status of Northeast Texas report, our region experiences higher mortality rates than the rest of Texas for heart disease, stroke, cancer, and chronic lower respiratory disease. If Northeast Texas were its own state, compared to the other 50 states in the U.S., we would rank 47th or lower for each of these causes of death. The reasons for these health disparities are numerous and complex, and include, up to this point, reduced access to healthcare.
The Department of Internal Medicine plays a pivotal role in meeting this moment. As the largest department within the school, with more than 100 faculty members and seven approved residency and fellowship programs, we are uniquely positioned to make a meaningful impact through patient care, education, and research.
Our faculty are leading important work, including multiple NIH-funded research programs, and we are committed to continued growth, expanding clinical research opportunities, recruiting exceptional faculty, and creating rich learning environments for our trainees. We strive to achieve this ambitious vision of reducing health disparities.
Together, we are working to build a healthier future for East Texas.
