Roger L. Lirely is a Professor of Accounting at The University of Texas at Tyler, where he has served since 2010. His academic leadership includes roles as Chair of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Business Law (2010–2024), and Interim Dean of the Soules College of Business (2018-2019). Prior to joining UT Tyler, he held faculty and administrative positions at Western Carolina University, including Department Head and Professor. Before entering academia, Dr. Lirely worked in corporate finance, serving as Corporate Treasurer and Operations Manager at Financial Services, Inc., and as Assistant to the Vice-President at Millard Maintenance Service Co.
Dr. Lirely teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate accounting courses, with particular emphasis on taxation, fraud examination, and financial accounting. He is known for integrating practical career guidance into his curriculum, including courses like “How to Build and Manage a Successful Accounting Career.” His teaching spans foundational principles to advanced topics in tax compliance, planning, and research.
His research interests center on taxation, financial reporting, and corporate governance. He has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, including recent work on taxpayer rights under IRC 7430, unauthorized disclosure of tax information, and the impact of presidential communications on global financial markets. His scholarship also explores earnings management, board independence, and liquidity measures in the energy sector. Dr. Lirely’s work reflects a commitment to bridging academic inquiry with real-world financial and legal challenges.
