Housing Residency Requirement

UT Tyler encourages students to live on campus to enhance their academic success, engagement, and connection to the university community. Students who have completed fewer than 60 college credit hours* are generally expected to live in approved university housing if space is available.

*Please note: AP Credit, Dual Credit, and Credit-by-Exam hours do not count toward the 60-credit-hour total.

Students who are subject to the residency requirement may satisfy it by living in one of the following approved residential communities:

UT Tyler Managed Communities

• Ornelas Hall
• Patriot Village
• Victory Village
• Liberty Landing

Partner Property

• CLV- University Pines Apartments

Housing assignments are dependent upon available space and are not guaranteed.

Residency Waiver Eligibility

Students may request a waiver of the residency requirement if they meet one or more of the following criteria:

• Live within 50 miles of Tyler with a parent or legal guardian.*
• Are married.
• Are 21 years of age or older by the 12th class day of the semester.
• Are active-duty military, currently enlisted, or veterans and can provide documentation.
• Have a documented medical condition or disability that cannot be reasonably accommodated in university housing.
• Have custody of a child and can provide appropriate documentation.
• Are enrolled in eight or fewer credit hours during the fall and/or spring semester.

 How to Request a Waiver

Students who believe they qualify for a waiver must submit a Residency Waiver Request through the Housing Portal in myUTTyler.

Please note that meeting one of the criteria above does not automatically grant a waiver. All requests must be reviewed and approved by Housing & Residence Life.

While approval cannot be guaranteed, our staff is available to review individual circumstances, discuss available options, and help students understand the waiver process.

Important Information

Students who are subject to the residency requirement must either:

• Reside in approved university housing, or
• Receive an approved residency waiver.

Students who do not secure housing and do not receive an approved waiver may be assessed housing and meal plan charges.

* The residency distance requirement is subject to change based on housing demand, operational needs, university priorities, and available housing capacity.
