General Surgery Frequently Asked Questions
Are you ACGME accredited?
Yes, we are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education as a five– year general surgery training program.
How do I submit my application?
We accept applications through ERAS.
Will you be offering virtual interviews?
All interviews wil be held virtually via Microsoft Teams.
What is the application deadline?
Our deadline for applications is Dec. 31.
Do you require prior US clinical Experience?
Prior U.S. clinical experience is preferred.
Can I select my interview date?
We do offer flexible scheduling through ERAS where an applicant can select any available date or can request to be added to the wait-list.
What if I cannot make it on my interview date or need to change dates?

What will the virtual interview day look like?
We will hold two separate sessions each interview day morning (7:45a.m.-12p.m.) and afternoon (12:45-5p.m.). You will only attend one session. Each applicant will have four faculty interviews, which will include the program director. An optional pre-interview event with currect residents will be held the evening before each interview session.
Will the Program allow Moonlighting?
We do allow moonlighting PGY 3 -5 once a full license is obtained.
How many Residents does your Program accept?
We have three categorical PGY1 positions each year for a full complement of 15 residents. We currently do not offer preliminary positions.

- UT Health Tyler (Primary site)
- UT Tyler Health Science Center
- UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas (Transplant)
- Parkland Health (Burns)
- Childrens Medical Center (Pediatrics)
Do you offer an employment benefits package?
Yes, in conjunction with UT System benefits.
Do you accept foreign graduates?
Yes, (Need to complete step 1 and step 2 and ECGMG certified).
Does your program sponsor Visas? If yes, what type?
Yes, our institution sponsors J1 visas only.
Do you accept Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine graduates?
Yes, we accept both MDs and DOs.
