Research Interests:

Dr. Mastel-Smith’s research focuses on promoting the health and well-being of people living with a dementia diagnosis and their care partners. She is dedicated to reducing the stigma associated with a dementia diagnosis and building inclusive communities where people with dementia can remain as independent as possible, enjoy quality of life, and stay engaged in meaningful community activities. In her rural community, Dr. Mastel-Smith spearheads a dementia-friendly initiative and facilitates a care partner support group. She has successfully obtained grants to support the initiative’s efforts including funding for community education, simulation, and an art program. Her current research interests include exploring the impact of improvisation-based interventions for care partners of people with dementia and how a dementia diagnosis influences spirituality.
