2. Financial Aid

Loans, grants, scholarships, work-study—you name it, we’ve got it!
Financial Aid is used by the large majority of our students in one way or another. You are welcome to use it too.

If you're planning to use any type of Financial Aid, it's best to get started as soon as possible. Coordinating all the details between you, the Department of Education, and us can take some time. It's never too late to complete the FAFSA, but to certify your aid is ready by the Bill Due Date, we need your FAFSA submitted by August 1st. If you're on track to meet this deadline, great! Just follow the next few steps below, and we've got you covered. If you're submitting after August 1st, no worries. Simply use one of the other payment options on this page to tide you over until your Financial Aid is processed.

Let's get started and make sure everything is in place for a smooth semester!

Here's a broad overview of the steps to get Financial Aid:
  1. FAFSA: Complete your Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
  2. Enroll: Make sure you're enrolled in at least half-time (6 hours).
  3. Accept/Decline Awards: Review the offers and tell which to use.

5. Payment Deferment

Need More Time? Consider Payment Deferment! Sometimes you just need a little extra time— to feel less stress, get your finances ready, or wait for Financial Aid to process. That’s where Payment Deferment comes in! Setting this up pushes your payment due date from the beginning of the semester towards the end. This gives you the breathing room you need to have your financial aid applied to your account and focus on starting your semester off right. Meet new people, find your classes, and dive into your studies.

At UT Tyler, we call this the Emergency Loan. Don't worry—it's not an actual loan, and there's no interest. It’s just a name.

How to Setup!

7. Outside Scholarships!

Outside scholarships are like surprise gifts from organizations, companies, or individuals that help pay for your education because you are awesome. They’re independent of your school, so this is extra funding separate from our own Financial Aid and Scholarships. Applying for them is worth the effort, as they can significantly lighten your financial load! If you have an outside loan to bring to us. Let us know. The steps usually are handled at the organization and they mail us a check to provide you funding for tuition, books, or other college expenses, but sometimes they need us to print a schedule or letter of acceptance for you. These can take some time so be sure to track it.

8. 529 College Savings Plan/Program

A 529 College Savings Plan is like an investment account set up and laser-focused on one thing: paying for college. If you or a family member set this up long ago and your ready to use it. Let us know!
