Psychology Internship Application

 

Students interested in applying for the internship program should submit an online application through the APPIC website. The UTTHSC program number is: #2345.

Applicants may apply for more than one internship track. Track preferences and qualifications should be clearly stated in the applicant’s cover letter.

A complete application consists of the following materials:

1. A completed Online AAPI (APPIC’s standard application)
2. Cover letter (as part of AAPI)
3. A current Curriculum Vitae (as part of AAPI)
4. Three Standardized Reference Forms, two of which must be from persons who have directly supervised your clinical work (as part of AAPI)
5. Four essays (as part of APPI)
6. Official transcripts of all graduate coursework
7. Specific supplemental materials are encouraged for each training track:
8. General Health Track: Two treatment summaries, ideally one long-term case and one short-term case
9. Child Clinical Track: One child treatment summary and one child psychological assessment
10. Adult Neuropsychology Track: Two psychological assessments, ideally including neuropsychological measures

All application materials must be received by the date noted in the current APPIC directory listing in order to be considered. This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use any ranking-related information from any intern applicant.

Application Screening and Interview Processes

The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center Psychology Internship Program will base its selection process on the entire application package noted above; however, applicants who have met the following qualifications prior to beginning internship will be considered preferred:

1. A minimum of 500 total combined assessment and intervention hours
   1. With a preference of 450 hours of intervention experience and 50 hours of assessment experience for the General Health Psychology track
   2. With a preference of 400 hours of intervention experience and 100 hours of assessment experience for the Child Clinical track
   3. With a preference of 300 hours of intervention experience and 200 hours of assessment experience for the Adult Neuropsychology track
2. Dissertation proposal defended
3. Some experience or special interest in working with rural and or underserved populations
4. Current enrollment and good standing in an APA-accredited doctoral program.

In addition to general qualifications, the following experiences are preferrable for each track:

1. General Health Psychology: Experience in medical and/or integrated care settings is preferred.
2. Child Clinical: Experience conducting therapy and psychological assessment with children and adolescents is preferred.
3. Adult Neuropsychology: Experience conducting full, integrated psychological batteries is preferred. Preference will be given to applicants who have experience with intellectual measures (i.e., WAIS-V), memory measures (i.e., NAB, WMS-IV), language measures (i.e., CVLT-3), and personality measures (i.e., MMPI-3).

While preferred, the above qualifications are not essential for consideration. Applicants who do not meet the above qualifications should justify their relevant qualifications and state any additional experiences they expect to accrue before internship.

PLEASE NOTE: Due to regulations of a federal grant funding the internship program, applicants who are not US citizens or permanent residents (green card holder) cannot receive federal funding. For this reason, until federal funding rules change, we will consider only applicants who are currently US citizens or permanent residents.

All applications will be screened by the Training Committee, using a standard Application Rating Scale, and evaluated for potential goodness of fit with the internship program. Applicants will be invited for interviews based upon the results of this screening process. If applicants are invited to interview, they will be notified by email in early December. Virtual interviews will be scheduled in early January with members of the Training Committee. Interviews will be conducted using a standard set of interview questions, although members of the Training Committee may ask additional interview questions of applicants as appropriate.

Participation in the APPIC Match

The Training Committee will hold a meeting within two weeks of the final interviews being completed to determine applicant rankings. The full application package and information gleaned from the interview process will be utilized in determining applicant rankings. As a member of APPIC, The University of Texas at Tyler Health Science Center Psychology Internship Program will participate in the national internship matching process by submitting its applicant rankings to the National Matching Service. Disclosures

• Psychology Interns are hired employees of UT Tyler Health Science Center, a State of Texas agency. Employment and training as an intern will be based on successfully passing criminal background checks and health screenings. Health screenings include an occupational health exam, including a tuberculosis test, spirometry and PAPR fit testing. Immunizations are required to be up to date or brought up to date. Flu shots are required and provided to all interns.
• UT Tyler Health Science Center is a drug-free and nicotine-free campus. Employees, including interns, may be subjected to drug and nicotine screening and must have clear test results to be considered and enter training.
• Elective rotations are scheduled off-campus, such as at Terrell State Hospital. Rental cars are provided or personal vehicles may be used at the individual’s own expense. To be eligible for the provided rental car, an intern must have a current, valid driver’s license.
• Interns may receive hospital-funded health insurance and life insurance according to plan documents beginning July 1.
• Interns are automatically enrolled in the Teacher Retirement System of Texas. The TRS retirement plan follows ERISA guidelines and UT Systems plan documents. For specific information please request the plan summary document from the Human Resources Department.
