Financial Aid: The Big Steps
(Parent and Student General Guide)

1. Complete the FAFSA:
Submit the FAFSA so the university can determine eligibility for grants, loans, and other aid.

2. Complete Any Financial Aid “Task Items”:
Check your MyUTTyler student portal for required documents or verification steps. Common items include tax documents, identity verification, or additional forms.

3. Receive Your Financial Aid Awards Offer:
Once everything is complete, the university prepares an award offer and posts it for you to review.

4. Accept or Decline Your Awards:
Student reviews each award (grants, scholarships, loans, work-study) and accepts or declines as needed. If loans are accepted, additional steps apply (below).

5. Complete Loan Requirements (If You Accepted Loans):
 - Entrance Counseling (student completes)
 - MPN: Master Promissory Note (student completes)

6. Processing and Verification:
The university confirms you have met the requirements and your aid is cleared to apply to charges.

7. Aid Is “Disbursed”:
Financial aid is released and applies to the student bill (tuition, fees, housing, etc.).

8. "Refunds"! (If Eligible):
If aid exceeds the total bill, the remaining amount may be issued as a refund to the student (typically via direct deposit or a refund method on file).
