Omnissa Horizon/VMware Student Guide

Omnissa Horizon provides secure remote access to applications and resources used during the clinical phases of the medical school curriculum. You may also hear this application referred to as VMware Horizon or simply VDI. VMware's end-user computing products are now branded as Omnissa Horizon.

Students will use Horizon to access several university and clinical applications, including resources used to access Citrix and Epic.

Your Login Credentials

Access to the UT Tyler VDI environment uses the university credentials provided to you before entering Phase 2 of the curriculum. Your username will be associated with an account ending in @uthct.edu or @uttyler.edu. These credentials are separate from the student credentials you may normally use for Canvas, email or other student services.

Accessing UT Tyler VDI

Students can access the UT Tyler VDI/Horizon environment.

For all sign-ins, we recommend opening the site in a private or incognito browser window. This helps prevent your browser from automatically attempting to authenticate using a previously signed-in student Microsoft account.

Browser Access or Horizon Client?

After navigating to the VDI portal, you may have the option to access resources through your browser or through the Omnissa Horizon Client installed on your computer.

Browser Access

The Horizon Web Client allows you to access available remote applications directly through a supported web browser without installing additional software.

Browser access can be useful for:

  • Quick access
  • Testing your credentials
  • Accessing VDI from a temporary computer
  • Troubleshooting login problems
Omnissa Horizon Client

For frequent use, students can install the Omnissa Horizon Client. The desktop application generally provides the best experience when accessing remote desktops and applications for extended periods. To install the client please visit this page.
